How we begin
Our workshop, our home
Akar Wangi tries to create a home atmosphere for the 15 young adults currently enrolled in its livelihood skills training program. Everything they need is provided in our small, but well-equipped batik workshop. The young interns are introduced to and practice all the basic steps in the batik making process from drawing on a piece of clean white cloth to wax application to hand painting and coloring. Just as it has been done for hundreds of years, all work is done manually, and no machines of any type are used.

When completed, these masterpieces of textile art are offered for sale, and all money raised is reinvested back into the village workshop to keep the program sustainable.
